Introduction to Linda Olson
About me
Born in Chicago, I lived on the South side of the city and the suburbs through High School As many of my friends
were Mexican, I picked up Spanish as a child, and still speak it (I am told) with a Mexican accent. Professionally
I began as a middle school teacher (English and History) in upstate New York, moving to Ottawa, Ontario and into
specialized treatment and counseling with families and “disturbed” children. I finished a graduate degree in Psychology
at York University in Toronto before returning to the US.
My fascination with bettas started early. I first joined the IBC in 1978, and became an IBC Judge 3 years later.
After moving to Tucson, Arizona, I started a Chapter there, and got to know most of the people active in the hobby
as Flare Editor between the years of 1981 and 1989.
Since 1992 I have been living and working in Denver, where we have also now started a Chapter, the Rocky Mountain
Betta Society. A few years ago I found Aquabid and started talking (typing really. . . on Yahoo and MSN Messenger)
to breeders in Thailand. I didn’t realize it at the time, but they were seeking out a transhipper, and decided I had
the resume they were looking for. Although I tell people I got dragged “kicking and screaming” into this, it has
been extremely rewarding, and has opened up the opportunity for some very warm and wonderful friendships on both
sides of this planet.
